NHS (National Honors Society)

The National Honor Society (NHS) recognizes and honors high school students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. The National Honor Society challenges students to become active in school activities and community service, as well as pursue academic achievement.

Dear National Honor Society Candidate:

Your outstanding academic performance will qualify you to be considered for membership in the Fountain Hills High School National Honor Society, a prestigious national organization. Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors a high school student can earn. Scholarship is one of the four areas taken into account for selection. Your current cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and a rigorous class schedule is the first step toward membership. The next step is to fill out the membership application, return it to the NHS advisor, and survive a highly-competitive judging process. The judging process involves the faculty council of five teachers who will judge you in the categories of scholarship, leadership, character, and community service. In April, we will notify the selected candidates, and they will take part in the May Induction Ceremony. The process is highly selective.

NHS is a service organization. NHS members participate in numerous NHS activities, including organizing the school food drive, ushering at school events, and manning the high school’s Homework Hub Tutoring Center. NHS membership activities are invaluable to the school community and are especially attractive for college applications and scholarships.

If you are interested in applying for NHS membership, the application form is available on this website. Please submit application to Mrs. Barsema in B101 by the due date. Make sure you have few or no unexcused absences and a clean discipline record. Note the application due date. We will not accept late applications.

Homework Hub

Homework Hub assists students daily for Power hour, for a quiet place to study. We are also open for tutoring every Thursday from 2:20–3:20 p.m. Tutors will be available in the cafeteria every Wednesday during lunch. This tutoring is a free service.

We require NHS volunteers spend five hours per semester peer tutoring for free. Contact any NHS member to request this free service. Tutoring must be on school grounds or at the Fountain Hills library, or with a coach or teacher to monitor.

Tutoring for hire is also available. E-mail the current tutoring chair for information. Student tutors will meet to assist you at the high school library or the Fountain Hills Library. A modest fee will be charged, due at the time of tutoring.

Service Projects

Fountain Hills High School NHS performs three service projects annually. For more information, contact our service chair.
